LICHTSTRAHL 158 GOSPEL: Luke 8, 4-18 TRINITY 11.2.24
THE SEED IS THE WORD OF GOD
In the beginning of his gospel John the evangelist states the very well-known, but still largely incomprehensible fact: “Everything came into being through the WORD and nothing of all that has come into being was made except through the WORD.” Is John speaking about the past, the present or the future? Is everything today still made and happening through the WORD only, “the WORD which is God and that is with God” - as John states as well - or is there something changing in the sole responsibility of what is going to happen, once the WORD is spoken.
Plant seeds are surely made by God. Seeds, that need some soil to fall into, seeds that need caring, seeds that want to grow and want to produce a blossom to secure future. In nature we all know, that the seed of a certain plant will always produce the same plant and the same blossom of flower or fruit again. There is nothing in the world, that will change the determination of a seed of a certain plant. A sunflower seed will produce a sunflower and nothing else. That is the law of the seed in natural plant life.
In today’s gospel the seed is taken as a parable for the WORD of God which is is not sown into earthly soil, but into peoples’ ears, peoples’ hearts, peoples’ fates and paths. These seeds are of a completely different nature. They also need caring, not too much competition, also need a good soil to be able to grow. But there is a fundamental difference to the plant seed in nature. That is, that the BLOSSOM, that comes out of such a seed, is not determined by the seed. Anything can come out of the WORD of God, that is either spoken to us personally in the course of our lives, our fates. When the WORD of God speaks, it will start growing there is no doubt about that, but WHAT it is going to grow into depends on the human being. Whether it is developing a blossom, that shows beauty, colour, strength and future or a blossom that is small, very fragile and shows marks of negligence or traumatic scars is the task of the one, into whose life the seed is sown. Many such seeds are sown onto our paths through life by our guardian angels, by higher angelic beings, by the Christ himself. They are sown into individual lives, into the lives of families, free communities or nations or even the whole of humanity. The more challenging they are to understand and accept, the more meaningful the development of a strong blossom of beauty most probably will be for the whole of humanity.
If we receive such a challenging seed through the WORD of God we can make sure, that it will not be eaten up all kinds of distraction, but will be kept in our hearts. We can make sure, that there are no rocks meeting the roots wanting to grow into the depths of our soulbeing. We can make sure that there is not too much thorny and shrubby density, which will suffocate the seed. We can make sure, that we produce a soil that is like a good compost: warm, fertile and in ongoing process. Focusing on the seed in such a way will make us truly competent to understand, accept and take up our part in producing a strong blossom out of the seed. Loving and supporting powers will move to our sides and accompany us as gardeners of the seed of the WORD of God. The flowers will then all together appear as a bouquet for the future, each flower raying out into the world in its own beauty, colour and strength.
