LICHTSTRAHL 139 GOSPEL: Luke 18 (35-43) TRINITY 20. August 2023
THE HEALING OF A BLIND MAN Dear friends! We speak of a healthy and functioning organism, when everything is in balance. If in plantlife the roots, the stems and leaves as well as the blossoms develop in a balanced way, supporting each other and making growth possible, we speak of a healthy plant. At the same time we do also know, that if we reduce or trim one part of a plant, another is increasing in strength, size and productivity. If all the sense organs in a human being are functioning in a balanced and undisturbed way, we speak of a healthy senselife. It is however also there a fact, that a person with for instance no eyesight, a blind person, develops a sensitivity and efficiency in the other sense organs, like the ears. That must have been the case with the blind beggar sitting at the roadside leading to Jericho. He sat there every day and surely he, on the day of his encounter with the Christ Jesus, heard from far that an unusual crowd was nearing him. Maybe it was unusually big, or unusually excited or unsually intense – he heard that with his sensitive ears and immediately reacted with great interest: “What is all this about?” But not only his ears revealed to him what was coming. We can imagine that a blind person develops a second sight much more strongly than seeing persons. The sight of the soul eye. In our path towards Michaelmas we are made aware of the potential of our soul eyes. That we as human beings in our development should become aware and train our soul eyes. The Michael epistle starts with the words: “THE EYES OF OUR SOUL BEHOLD HIM, WHO IS THE COUNTENANCE OF GOD…..”Can we relate to that, if our soul eyes are still undiscovered? Being blind and totally dependant on the help of others had prepared the beggar at Jericho to experience the inner light that was coming towards him. Surely he had heard a lot about the Son of David, who was to come and heal. Surely he had had enough time to think and ponder about the news that were travelling throughout the country about Jesus of Nazareth being that saviour. Surely he had gone through a lot of endurance and humiliation to develop a deep belief in the coming of the Son of David. And thirdly he surely had experienced helplessness to an extent, that his own willpower became very strong and alert. And so he knew who Jesus was, and so he had faith and so he did not hesitate to come into action, even when he was told to be quiet. The healings in the New Testament are not miracles or wonders, they are very real if we read and listen to them carefully. The conditions are clearly stated in this very short episode of the healing of the blind beggar at Jericho and we tend to overread them. However every single word is a whole world of truth and meaningfulness. If we awaken to these worlds of words, healing can take place anywhere as a result of our awareness and understanding. LICHTSTRAHL 138 EVANGELIUM: Lukas 9 (1-17) TRINITATIS 13. AUGUST 2023
Christine Voigts LICHTSTRAHL 136 GOSPEL: MATTHEW 7 (1-14) TRINITY 30.7.23
ENTER THROUGH THE NARROW GATE Dear friends! The gospel often makes use of the images of a plant to make something clear about the being and becoming of humanity. When the Christ Jesus uses the different images of a plant, he is not yet speaking in clear words about the full truth. He is then paving a way for those who cannot understand the clear teachings yet. And so he often uses the image of a plant. The image of a plant when it is still either a seed, or when it is at the point of germination, or when it enters into the phase of growth - growing a stem to stand upright , forming branches to connect with its surrounding, producing leaves to be nourished by the sun - and finally when it is producing a blossom with seeds as the ultimate aim of its being. All these images can become very helpful to understand the being and life of humankind. If a plant has germinated, it starts to grow, forming a strong stem and many leaves. We see the result of the working of strong and active lifeforces, bringing the plant into existence, letting it grow for a long time and then finally prepare the unfolding of a blossom. What does however happen to that impressive and noticeable growth just before the plant enters into the stage of making a bud for the flower? Usually we are not observant of this phase, but it is extremely important. Everything visible from the outside seems to come to a halt. There is not much growth any more, the stem becomes thinner und more vulnerable. The leaves undergo a significant change – they change their colour, their shape and become thinner and smaller. It is a motionless moment of complete vulnerability, selflessness, of being connected with the cosmos, and awaiting something sigfnificant and beautiful, something that is carrying future. Surely we are allowed and encouraged to take this image of a plant and use it as an image if we struggle about the words and the teachings of todays gospelreading. They are not made for the time when we are growing, getting strong, connect to our surrounding world and have to unfold our every day ego to find our orientation in life. There we are asked to judge, to measure with our own individual measure, to stop asking for help and assistance and take up responsibility. There we are walking on the broad path with all the others to become an active, visible and competitive member of our society. But then there are also the moments, when all the outside activities come to halt. When a moment of standstill enters into our lives. They do come anyway, for everybody and at any moment in their lives. But we can also consciously ask for them to come. For that we need total selflessness, as we can observe it in the plant entering into the phase of forming a blossom. Then the Christ can teach us the conditions under which we will meet our highest inner destiny and can start to unfold blossoms in our lives. On our way towards Michaelmas we need to realize as human beings , that we have in fact grown very strong – but that out of that strength and freedom we need to ask, to seek and to knock at the door of Him, who is leading us on into forming the blossoms of humankind. Christine Voigts LICHTSTRAHL 135 EVANGELIUM: Markus 8 (27-38) TRINITATIS 23. Juli 2023 DER FELS IN DER BRANDUNG Liebe Freunde!
Christine Voigts LICHTSTRAHL 134 GOSPEL: John 3 (22-36) ST. JOHN 2. July 2023
THE WRATH OF GOD REMAINS ON HIM Dear friends! It is exactly such a saying, such a statement – the wrath of God remains on him - that is making it extremely difficult for us human beings to hear and believe in the words: “ It was not to judge the world that the Father sent the Son into the world, but to save the world.” Are we not all longing for the light to end the time of darkness, for the saving from disorientation, from fear through disconnectedness. Where can we find that light? Is it not because of the wrath of God, that we have to walk in this darkness? Do we not have to accept this? We are all aware that the human being has to a great extent become very guilty in regard to the world of creation, both the physical and the spiritual world. And there is this almighty being, which is himself spiritual - physical and is the ground of existence of the heavens and of the earth (as is said in the Creed). And is that not exactly the God of whom John says, that his wrath remains on the human being not trusting in the Son. That does not make us feel free, does not release us from darkness, fear and denial. There is no other way to relate freely to today’s content of the gospel reading, than starting to differentiate deeply between the working of the Father and the Son God. If we fear the wrath of God remaining upon us, we do not realize that we have the power to escape that feeling. The moment we decide to believe in the Son and acknowledge that he is the beginning of a completely new relationship between God and humanity, we will always fear and interprete the challenges in life as a sign of the wrath of God. We have to prepare for a challenging future, a new level of human responsibility through becoming very aware of the relationship of the Father to the Son and the difference between them. The Father has given all existence into the hands of the Son. Yes! That does however not mean, that he has withdrawn. It also does not mean, that he stays the final judging instance. It means, that he is carrying, for ever being the undestructable ground for the Son to fulfill his task. For the human being to fulfill their task. If John says, that the wrath of God remains upon those, who do not trust the Son, he is indicating that the only way to go into the future is the connection with the Son and change the inner relationship with him. There is no wrath, there is just the inner pain of not moving on. We can trust, that the Father is holding, but we have to join the Son to start moving. How can we do that? We can listen to His word. We can experience Him as living inside our own personal being. We can get prepared to experience death in a completely new light. We can prepare to understand the working of the evil forces in a completely new light. We can realize, that the time of preparation soon will come to an end and the time of willpower and deed needs to enter into the life of those, who are truly placing their faith in the working of the Son. HOW DO I FIND THE MESSIAH? Dear friends! All of us are living with a deep question – some more, others less consciously. The question: how do I find my inner light, my inner destiny, my inner peace, my strength. How can I trust, that there is a world of angels ascending und descending all the time above me, how can I believe in heaven? And even more: will I ever be able to see the heavens opened? The answer to these questions stay hidden and so we all carry a deep fear in us, that we will loose everything, what we possess. The frantic attempt to secure outer possessions as savings, homes and health is revealing the fact, that we do not really have an inner stability and security. In truth we are slowly but surely getting more and more concerned about our inner being, because it is in danger, maybe even much more dramatically than our outer belongings? And so we do unconsciously live with the question all the time: How do I find the Messiah, who will release me of this fear? John in the first chapters of his gospel describes in a very exact way, how the the circle of disciples begins to form around Jesus Christ after his baptism in the Jordan river (which made him become the Messiah). How did they find the Messiah? Maybe we can identify with the one or other of the disciples path leading towards Him. Firstly it is the loved and respected teacher John the Baptist, who connects the first two disciples, Andrew and his friend, with the Christ. His teachings and their own baptism led them onto the way to meet the Christ. Andrew then finds Peter, his brother, and brings him to the Christ. Through family connections this encounter becomes reality. The next, Phillip, is someone, who has no connections at all, but is addressed at first sight by Jesus in an astonishingly direct way: “Follow me!” and he immediately does that. He then finds a friend, Nathanael. Nathanael is the first, that reacts critically and has many questions and doubts: “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” He seems to have knowledge and schooling. In meeting up with Jesus Christ personally then, he realizes, that there is a deep insight and understanding into his former life. He is addressed as an Israelite in whom there is no untruth. It is recognized and highly appreciated by the Christ that he had been sitting under the fig tree, schooling himself in meditation and walking his own inner spiritual path. And so he feels that he can build onto his previous spiritual growth, develop further and is able to become a disciple. There are many ways to find the Messiah, who is called the Christ. They are very individual and very special for each and every one of us. It does not matter, whether it is family, friends, “out of the blue” or because of our personal pursuing of a spiritual aim. It does however matter, that we are aware and awake enough to react and follow Him, when moments of true encounter suddenly occur. And hear an inner voice speaking: if I follow this call, I will experience greater things, than I have ever experienced before. Liebe Freunde!
Christine Voigts |
