All the fun of a traditional Family Advent Fair
The Christian Community Family Advent Fair is an annual event that is suitable for the whole family. Children love the Fair because of the magical places created such as the Light Boats, the Hansel and Gretel House and Mother Goose; the joy of a traditional puppet theatre with hand-crafted puppets and the many creative and artistic activities. Children leave with a richness of experience and a hamper of self made things to show off with pride.
Parents know that their children are safe, that the activities are wholesome and that there is adequate supervision. Adults can enjoy browsing the stalls for Christmas gifts, good reads or come away with surprisingly useful items from the White Elephant (as they say "one man's rubbish is another man's gold"). The Tea Garden is tranquil and relaxing and a great place to meet and catch up with friends over coffee and home-made cake.
Food is plentiful and home-made - the selection of dishes is as varied as our congregation. Boerwors rolls and pancakes fill the gaps for the hungry.
The annual Advent Fair had been a tradition since the 1970's when the church first acquired the property in Ferndale, Randburg. Christmas is a familiar Christian and commercial festival, but Advent, the period of the four Sundays leading up to Christmas, is a less well know festival. This is a period for the preparation for Christmas and coming of the Child. Our Advent Fair is the start to Advent, but because December is a busy time in South Africa with the end of the school year, we hold the Fair at a time when people can still come and relax.
Many of the activities that the children participate in stem from the activities of the annual summer camps for children through the years. The aim has always been to create a wholesome day for children and fashion around this a worthwhile experience for parents.
The years have seen different people lead the organisation and different participants and so the Advent Fair is never stagnant changing in character and personality while holding to the same values. This makes it worth visiting again and again - to re-experience the good and the trusted and to find new activities and experiences.
